The implicit association test (IAT) is an assessment designed to measures the strength of associations between concepts (eg black people, gay people) and evaluations (eg good, bad) or stereotypes (eg athletic, clumsy).

The test’s format has been used to investigate biases in racial groups, gender, sexuality, age, and religion.

The IAT is the subject of much controversy regarding its validity, reliability, and whether test results are an accurate representation of implicit bias.

Part of the controversy is about how the test is used. For example, if it is used to decide whether someone is suitable for a particular job or position.
